Sharpeners

Hiyas all! So, sharpeners have become the bane of my existence. I think I have tried at least 8 this year. I have yet to find one that is even satisfactory, let alone good. I was terribly disappointed in the KUM Palomino long point. It worked fabulously ...for ONE DAY! Then it started reliably breaking the leads of my precious precious Palomino pencils. Grrr. I've tried three electric sharpeners, several wedge, two long pointers, a hand crank. Most wedges will work ok for a while, some are made crummy and never quite work right. The best so far has been a KUM brass wedge, it's heavier and that seems to make a more even point. But I want to find a GOOD sharpener with a shavings catcher. Aye.

Caveats:
1. Dunno what it might amount to, could be graphical, musical, poetic. I'm using the broad definition of art here.
2. I have limited time and resources so turn around may be slow, but I'll try to be reasonable.

Painting the Gallery

The grad students are almost finished with the new MFA gallery. We painted today for about four hours. Painting the ceiling was like running a gauntlet; I'd paint for about a minute, then rest for two, then paint, then go to the water fountain...repeat. (oh, yes, it was as hot as an oven, a steamy oven, I had sweat dripping along my ears; yuck!) However, afterward, painting the walls was fun and easy. The glorious name the teaching committee decided on for this gallery was "Truss". Isn't that what's done to a pig before it's barbecued? Anyway, as much as I cringe at the thought of having artwork up at the "Truss Gallery", it should be good for exposure on first fridays.

Not only am I a pirate, but I'm Batman, too; this week keeps getting better and better...

Back from San Diego

Well, I'm back to the land of perpetual steam room (not in a good way), Bizzaro-world, and I miss San Diego already. Comic-con was fun, and I'm happy to have gotten to see all of you that I got to see, and miss those that I missed seeing. Comic con was soooo crowded this year, I could hardly walk through the dealer floor. I had to cover it in about 45 minute sections before getting fed up with the hordes of peoples and going upstairs to sit for a while, and I don't think I made it through the entire thing during the entire weekend. I went to preview night because I thought it would be less crowded, but, holy crap, I swear it was as bad as Saturday. It's become a mess lately, but I still had a lot of fun, it's one of the few times during the year I can be a part of something with 130,000 other people with the same interests. It is awesome, exciting, and totally exhausting. I suppose it's a good thing it only happens once a year. To everyone I only get to see at Comic-Con, see you next year!

Hi all!

Hope everyone had a good New Year.
School just started for me. It looks to be fun year. The only class I'm not looking forward to is the teaching class, but it is required to to be eligible to teach. (sigh) Not that I want to teach, but it's the only way to get financial assistance from the school. (sigh, again) The rest of my classes are great. Two of them are basically "do what I want" and one is an "illustrated narrative" course. (comic books) I've never been into comics, but I've always wanted to make a graphic novel. The instructor is into myth and the Joseph Campbell stuff. Our first assignment is to illustrate a creation myth from another culture. That should be fun.
They've been clearing the lot next door the past few days. I liked having the woodsy area , made me think we had more privacy. I think they're going to put in some apartments. That'll be nice and ugly to see right out the window. se la vie, huh.

We celebrated Christmas Eve with white russians and eggnog and bourbon. Yum Yum.

This year has been really great. I had a good semester, and plan on having a better one next year. I'm taking a class that involves making special effects for the film school, and a graphic novel/comic book course. I expect it to be quite fun.
Over winter break, I thought it would be a good time to put together a Faye Valentine model that I bought a year ago. However, I discovered that she had two left arms. Grrr. It's too bad, cuz this is a really cool model. So, I'll try and get some minis painted, I still owe some to a few people...
..That or I'll just play more Warcraft...whatever.

Grad School

Well, we got our art studios yesterday. There is an off campus "warehouse" where the studios are located. They cubicle type rooms, about 10 x 15. It's neat because you can walk around and see what other people are doing, (and steal their ideas...). There's some metal working equipment there, a couple of kilns, a tiny computer room, a display area, and two "installation rooms". There ia also an area outside if someone is working with toxic stuff. We're free to do just about anything we want, unless it's terribly dangerous, like the one time a grad student almost burned the place down because he tried mixing gasoline in a blender and it exploded...
It's strange being in the Graduate Class, because, art wise, everyone is either as good or better than I am. I feel pretty lucky to have gotten in to FSU after seeing what some of the other people have been doing. I did have to apply twice, though. I think I got in this year because there weren't a lot of sculpture people this year, mostly painters. Whatever the case, I'm in. Yay!

Thundestorms

Hi all, (all two of you!)There is a thunderstorm here today that is just like in the movies. Lightning flash OS. A crash of thunder like someone pounding a sheet of metal with a mallet, (a huge piece of metal, and a huge mallet, pounded by Thor...) Then...Rain pouring perfectly vertical. This is one of the nice things about Tallahassee, we get these wonderful thunderstorms almost every day in the summer, but it's been about four days since the last one.
As for me, haven't got anything to do until school starts in two weeks, so I'm going to sit here and wait for time to move around me. Until then, the daily rain storms are the highlight of my day.
When school starts, I'll hopefully have a studio at school so Grettr can stop complaining about my projects sitting unfinished in the middle of the kitchen, he won't even have to look at my stuff for two years.
Nothing much else, just trying to get into the habit of writing in this thing, cuz I know that there are a few of you out there that read it.

Hello all! (all two of you)

Well, after finally accepting that I wasn't going to get into grad school, and subsequently planning my future accordingly....
Out of the blue, totally unexpected, I get an email saying that I've been accepted into FSU MFA program, and they need to verify my mailing address so they can send me an acceptance letter.....
...WOOOOHOOOOO!
I don't know what to do.I'm so excited, and anxious, and I accidentally deleted the email so I don't even know if it's actually true.
That's all.
Just wanted to share that.
And I can't think right now.....

I realized the other day just how much time I spend wasting it on the internet. We just got cable, and feel like I don't have time to watch tv because I'm always on the computer. now that's sad.
Anyway, at the request of a good friend, I took some pictures of my recent artwork this morning and put them on Flicker.com. It's not all that great. Most of the stuff I've been doing lately has been for co-workers who want mundane things like portraits, flowers, and dolphins, *gag*. But, hey, I'm making a little bit of money on the side. However, the painting I'm working on now is of a male angel that I think will turn out really cool. I have also been painting miniatures; I'll put some photos of those up on flickr as well. THANKS for looking.

Anyway, I am so excited about getting to see everyone. I have been out of the "loop" (the 'Loop' encircles SoCal, creating a vortex of nice smoggy weather and perpetual traffic jams, and protection against nasty furrin-ners and the occaisional deserter trying to sneak back in. ) Not that I was altogether in the loop even when I lived there. But now I'm WAY OUT. And it will be nice to see everyone. ('everyone' meaning all two of you that read this...)
Since my last post, a rough year, not too much has changed. I still am not getting into Grad school, for Zeus knows what reason. I work at a crummy job. (I delivered papers for a while, It was kind cool, but turned me into a zombie during the day.) I'm basically a zombie at my current job, but ...whatever... I could complain about it, but it's my own fault, my lack of ambition, lack of superpowers .
oh, we upgraded our cable today. cause for celebration. White Russians, all around... That is about the extent of the excitement around here. Maybe I'll post again when the cat coughs up a hairball.

no event, I just wanted to write something here. I know that no one reads this but Brenden, but I felt like writing some stuff, and this is as good a place as any. And this is personal venting, so no one probably wants to read it anyway, but I can at least take up some space on the internet. ...on to our story...when we last left our, um, heros...
Life in Bizarro World. I swear, since moving to Florida, it's been like Bizarro World, and not in a bad way. In San Diego I never ever had someone ask me what kind of art I did, it was always, "what kind of art do you want to do?". I felt like if I didn't go to college and get a piece of paper that said "you are an artist" on it that I was a loser sleeping on my sister's couch. Actually, I think that's the So-Cal definition of artist="that loser that is sleeping on my couch". So, now I've got that wise-ass piece of paper, yeah, it thinks it's better than me, and, you know what, so what. Here, in Bizarro World, I get asked all the time what kind of art I DO, present tense, actively participating in this thing called life "do", not the mythical, never arriving future, stupid-happy-drunk insulting, "Oh, art degree, what on earth are you going to DO with that?" blink, blink, smile, swish hair, blink "do". After all the bull shit I had to dig through in school, I realize that I have no answer. I spent most of a decade trying to figure out what the teachers thought was "art" that I forgot about myself, and what I thought was art, and now I have NOTHING to show for my time and effort. Sure, I have all the junk I did in school, that I spent long days and nights finishing so that I would get a good grade, but it's all garbage. It's all figuring out what the teacher wants to see and giving it to them. Self-righteous pricks. You know why they are teaching art, because they couldn't cut it as real artists. Why the hell did I waste my time trying to please them! I could have done something truly cool in eight years, but, I didn't, stuck my head up some loser artist-wannabe teachers' assholes and got a piece of paper instead.
Anyway, back to Bizarro World. Ah so, I was turned down from FSU, probably because some above mentioned LAWT forgot to send my letter of recommendation on time, ugh!, but it may be for the best. There's a great song "Hurt" with a great line "If I could start again, a million miles away, I would keep myself, I would find a way." I think of Bizarro World as a way to start again, a way to not regret the things I did.
So, kiddies, the lesson for today is..." live your life, fuck school, and that fucking piece of paper is not better than you, and definitely not worth sacrificing yourself for."

Bubba-Ho-Tep Elvis versus the Mummy, starring Bruce Campbell. GO SEE IT! Nuff said. (Only two days left!) My rating: A glass or two of Newcastle and it's alllll goooood.

Catch Me if You Can. Starring DiCaprio and Hanks. About a natural born bullshitter. My reaction "Wow! Leonardo CAN act! And Tom Hanks can, too! " Good movie, lousy title. My rating: Can be enjoyed as is or with small glass of wine, or a fine sipping Scotch.

Super Troopers. If you haven't seen this movie, you don't know what your'e missing. Very sick, very twisted. Cops doing all the things that you suspected they did, but didn't really want to know about. My rating: At least four good sized cheap beers, a six pack if possible, and a bottle of rum. Drink all the beer first, then take rum as needed for the duration of the movie, shot glass optional. See with friends.
